Five celebrations we can’t wait to experience at Pebble Beach Concours 2023
As we creep ever closer to autumn, we’ve been to many fantastic motoring events already this year. Settling into the final few weeks of summer, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which will be held on 20th August, simply referred to as ‘Pebble Beach’, remains a perfect way to close out the busiest period in the automobile calendar with a spectacle that is recognised around the world.
The jewel in the crown of Monterey Car Week, Pebble Beach in California, USA, has been the host of some of the automotive industry’s most memorable machines. In our opinion, Pebble Beach is a sacred experience every petrolhead should go through at least once in their lives. In fact, we like it so much, that following our blog about our favourite upcoming classic car events in 2023, we thought Pebble Beach deserved its own special post! So, as we pack our suitcases for a jam-packed event, allow us to take you through five reasons why you should be excited about this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
60th anniversary of Lamborghini
With Lamborghini celebrating 60 years since its inception in 1963, expect a wide range of exotic and breathtaking cars expertly displayed on the picturesque Californian grounds. Such is the legacy of Lamborghini that a film was released detailing how this amazing carmaker came to be. The Italian brand is one of the most iconic car manufacturers of all time, boasting classic models such as the Countach, Diablo, and Miura. Having given us the most striking forms the automotive world has ever seen; Lamborghini has cemented itself as a leader in car design.
To celebrate the Italian marque’s 60th birthday, visitors of the Concours will be able to see Lamborghini’s most legendary cars displayed across the event as well as special displays including important classics, former show cars, and one-off concepts. If its displays are anything like its cars, Lamborghini’s 60th anniversary will be one to remember.
75th anniversary of Porsche
Another automotive legend reaching a milestone is Porsche, celebrating its 75th anniversary of making sports cars. Founded by Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche in 1946 and starting to make cars in 1948, the brand has amassed a cult-like following, with thousands of communities solely dedicated to Porsche cars. Whilst Porsche remains an industry leader in its ground-breaking electric vehicle technology, we are even bigger admirers of Porsche’s instantly recognisable design philosophy.
To commemorate an impressive milestone for one of the industry’s most iconic brands, the Concours will be displaying an array of Porsche sports cars dating from 1948 to 1973 alongside some of the German manufacturer’s successful racing cars from prototypes to race winners. Whether it’s a 356 or a 914, Pebble Beach’s special displays will be the perfect meeting point for all Porsche enthusiasts!
60 years of McLaren
Rounding off the celebrations at this year’s event, the venerable racing giant McLaren will be celebrating 60 years since it was founded by Bruce McLaren in 1963. There aren’t many racing teams with the pedigree of McLaren. Having joined Formula One in 1966, the Woking-based team has the second-most victories and has produced 12 driver championships. Many talented drivers have driven for its Formula One team including Ayrton Senna, Lewis Hamilton, and Mika Häkkinen, just to name a few.
McLaren has also had great success in other motorsport categories such as Can-Am, Indycar, and Extreme E. To celebrate the legendary British brand, Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will be giving McLaren its own special tribute, including displays involving its most iconic cars ranging from its Formula One collection to a selection of its sensational road cars.
American Dream cars
It would be rude for us to talk about an automotive event in the USA and not talk about America’s unique contribution to the motoring world. Following the success of many car makers such as Ford and General Motors, the 1950s is often regarded as the golden era of automotive manufacturing in the USA. This period saw cars that maybe weren’t the most technically advanced, but instead championed the idea of individuality. Therefore, the 1950s produced some of the most charismatic-looking cars the world had ever seen such as the Buick Roadmaster, Cadillac Eldorado, and the Ford Thunderbird.
To commemorate this unique era of the automobile, Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will be displaying very limited production cars or one-offs that tell an incredible story, both about the car and the person who owns it.
Vanderbilt Cup
Sticking with the American theme, the Vanderbilt Cup was a renowned US-based racing series in the early 20th Century. It started in 1904 when William K. Vanderbilt hosted one of the first international races in the USA, naming the cup after himself. The cars that were racing in this series were vehicles with huge engines, deafening sounds, and little to no safety equipment. Considering these cars were also racing on dirt roads, we have so much respect for the drivers who participated in these events.
To give us a flavour of the early Vanderbilt Cup glory days, which concluded in 1916, Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will be celebrating this inspiring racing series by displaying cars that participated in Vanderbilt races. The aim of this display is to showcase how far motorsport has developed to form the much safer and technically complex present-day cars we are accustomed to. Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance invites owners of early Vanderbilt Cup cars as well as other racing cars from that era.
